If you were to ask webmasters what the goals for their web site are, I expect that you would find that many of them would like to increase the number of visitors that their web site gets.
There is a simple reason for this
- generally speaking, the more visitors ("traffic") that a web site gets, the more money it makes. Of course, for simply putting up a web site and hoping for traffic is unlikely to produce results - if you want traffic you have to work for it, by actively promoting your web site.
There are many things that you can do to promote a web site, but I would suggest that a significant part of your promotion efforts should go into activites which will increasing the number of incoming links ("backlinks") to your web site.
This is for two reasons:
1. Links to your site can lead directly to traffic.
When a person see a link to your site, and clicks on it, you have a visitor.
2. More significantly, links to your web site can help contribute to higher search engine rankings. Search engines, (particularly Google with its famous "PageRank" system), take the number of links to a web site into account when ranking their search results. All other things being equal, a web site that has more incoming links will tend to rank more highly than one with fewer incoming links. But why is a higher ranking important? I expect you already know the answer to this - when people search, they click on higher ranked results much more frequently than lower ranked results.
One easy method to get many links to your site is to submit to directories.
There are over 1,000 Internet directories that list web sites, and many of them accept free submission. Thus a mass directory submissions is an easy way to quickly gain hundreds of incoming links. Of course, you may not have the time to manually submit to hundreds of directories (and to be honest, it's unlikely to be a good use of your time), so you might want to consider paying somebody to do the work for you, or investing in software to automate the process.
